Mitchell Waife, grandson of Yiddish author and playwright Sholem Aleichem, was interviewed by Christa Whitney on March 14, 2013 in Lantana, Florida.
Mitchell grew up in the Brighton Beach neighborhood of Brooklyn. Although his parents never taught him Yiddish or Russian, he was lucky to learn all about his famous grandfather from the late writer's widow, Mitchell's grandmother Olga, who lived with them.
Mitchell spends much of the interview describing his family's history. He traces Sholem Aleichem's life, from the scandalous story of how he met his wife (He was her tutor!), to his flight from Ukraine after he and his family narrowly escaped a deadly pogrom.
